How to bend stainless steel plate?

The stainless steel can be bent when heated to a high temperature until it becomes red hot.

Due to poor thermal conductivity and low elongation, the required deformation force is large; 321 stainless steel sheet has a strong springback tendency compared with carbon steel during bending; stainless steel sheet is relatively low in elongation compared to carbon steel. When bending, the bending angle R of the workpiece should be larger than that of carbon steel, otherwise there may be cracks.

Because the hardness of stainless steel plate is high and the cold work hardening effect is obvious, tool steel with heat treatment hardness above 60HRC should be selected when selecting press bending tools, and its surface roughness is an order of magnitude higher than that of carbon steel press bending tools.

Due to the poor tempering stability, when carbon steel is quenched and tempered, a lower tempering temperature needs to be selected to ensure higher strength, so that the resistance of the steel is low; in order to ensure better resistance, high tempering temperature is selected. The strength is low at temperature, so the comprehensive mechanical performance level of carbon steel is not high.

After the alloying elements are added to the steel, the basic components of the steel, iron and carbon, will interact with the added alloying elements. The intention of alloying steel is to use the interaction of alloying elements with iron, carbon and the effect on the iron-carbon phase diagram and the heat treatment of the steel to improve the structure and function of the steel.

To improve the strength, it is necessary to try to increase the resistance of the dislocation movement. The strengthening mechanisms in metals mainly include solid solution strengthening, dislocation strengthening, grain refinement strengthening, and second phase (deposition and dispersion) strengthening. The strengthening effect of alloying elements is precisely the use of these strengthening mechanisms.
