Galvanized wire for chain link fence is most often specified to Class 1 or Class 4 coating, and the right class is what determines whether the fence stays rust-free for a few years or several decades. This guide compares the two coating weights, with selection guidance for residential, commercial, coastal and industrial fencing projects.
Chain link fence is one of the highest-volume applications for galvanized wire, and the call between Class 1 and Class 4 coating weight is the single biggest driver of fence lifetime. Class 1 is the cost-down grade for short-life or dry-climate installations; Class 4 is the heavy-coating grade for long service life and corrosive environments. Choosing the wrong class shows up within a few years as red rust at the knuckles and tie wires, then progressive corrosion of the mesh itself.

What Class 1 and Class 4 Mean in Practice
Galvanized wire coating classes are defined by ASTM A641: Class 1 has a minimum zinc coating of about 1.2 oz/ft² (122 g/m²), while Class 4 has a minimum of about 3.0 oz/ft² (305 g/m²). In real terms, Class 4 carries roughly 2.5 times more zinc per unit area than Class 1. In a temperate inland climate, Class 1 may give 7–12 years of rust-free life on chain link mesh; in the same climate, Class 4 typically lasts 20–30 years. In coastal or industrial chloride exposure, the gap is even larger because chloride attacks zinc roughly 4–6 times faster than rural atmospheres.
When Class 1 Galvanized Wire Is Sufficient
Class 1 galvanized wire is the right specification for temporary construction fencing, event fencing, short-cycle agricultural fencing that will be re-tensioned or replaced every few years, and dry inland residential projects on a tight budget. It is also commonly used for the line wire and tension wire on chain link installations where the mesh itself is the higher-class grade. Because Class 1 is significantly cheaper than Class 4, it remains the dominant grade in markets where the buyer prioritizes first cost over service life.
When Class 4 Galvanized Wire Is the Necessary Choice
Class 4 galvanized wire is the standard specification for permanent chain link fence around industrial sites, ports, utilities, airports, sports facilities and high-security perimeters. It is also the right call for any coastal installation (within roughly 1–3 km of saltwater), for areas subject to de-icing salt, and for humid tropical climates. The thicker coating also resists damage at the knuckles and tie points where the mesh is twisted during weaving, which is the first area to fail on Class 1 wire.

Wire Diameter, Tensile Strength and Mesh Weaving
Chain link wire is most commonly produced in 9 gauge (3.76 mm), 11 gauge (3.05 mm) and 12½ gauge (2.70 mm) diameters, with tensile strength typically 75,000–90,000 psi (520–620 MPa) for standard residential and commercial mesh. Heavier security mesh uses 6 or 9 gauge wire at higher tensile. The galvanizing process is either done before weaving (GBW) or after weaving (GAW); GAW gives more uniform coating at the knuckles but is more expensive, while GBW is the cost-effective standard for Class 1 and most Class 4 mesh. For export orders, confirm whether the customer expects GBW or GAW.
What to Specify on the Fence Wire RFQ
State the coating class (Class 1 or Class 4 per ASTM A641), the wire gauge, the tensile strength range, the zinc coating process (GBW or GAW), and the coil weight or wire spool format. For coastal or industrial service, default to Class 4; for inland residential and temporary fencing, Class 1 is acceptable. Confirm that the line wire, tension wire, tie wire and gate frames are all specified to the same class, since mixing Class 4 mesh with Class 1 tie wire creates early rust spots that shorten the life of the entire fence.
