Color coated steel coil is sold by color and thickness, but the paint resin underneath the color drives the real service life. The two dominant systems are PVDF, a fluoropolymer, and PE, a polyester. They look identical in a sample book but perform very differently under sun and weather, and the price gap is large. Choosing PE where PVDF is needed causes premature fading and chalking, while specifying PVDF for indoor parts wastes budget. This guide explains how to match the paint system to the exposure.

How PVDF and PE Differ
PVDF, often called PVF2, is a fluorocarbon resin with very strong carbon-fluorine bonds that resist ultraviolet breakdown, chalking, and chemical attack. It keeps its color and gloss for many years of outdoor exposure and is the premium system for architectural exteriors. PE, or polyester, is a lower-cost resin that offers good flexibility, hardness, and color range but weathers faster under strong sun, losing gloss and shifting shade sooner than PVDF. The visible difference only appears after years of exposure, which is why the choice is so often made wrong.
When PVDF Is the Right Choice
For exterior architectural cladding, roofing, facades, and any painted steel that must hold its appearance for fifteen years or more under direct sun, PVDF is the correct specification. Its UV resistance means the color stays true, the surface resists chalking, and cleaning is easier over the life of the building. For coastal, industrial, or high-UV climates, PVDF is especially valuable because cheaper systems degrade quickly there. The higher cost is justified by avoiding repainting or panel replacement during the building life.

When PE Is the Right Choice
For indoor panels, appliance housings, ceiling systems, furniture parts, and any application sheltered from direct weather, PE polyester offers excellent value. Its color range and gloss options are wide, it forms and embosses well, and the lower cost is appropriate where long-term UV resistance is not required. PE is also acceptable for short-life outdoor applications or where the coating will be over-painted. The key is to reserve PE for service it can actually deliver, rather than using it as a cost saving on permanent exteriors.
What to Specify on the RFQ
Name the paint system explicitly, PVDF or PE, and for PVDF state the resin content, since premium PVDF systems specify a minimum fluorocarbon percentage. Specify the coating thickness for both primer and topcoat, the color reference, and the gloss level. Confirm the substrate and pretreatment, since a premium PVDF paint over the wrong substrate will still underperform. Request a coating performance statement covering weathering and pencil hardness, and for architectural projects ask for a warranty-backed system, since reputable paint systems carry defined exterior warranty periods.
