Pre-galvanized and hot-dip galvanized steel pipe look similar at first glance, but the two processes give very different coating structures and very different in-service lifetimes. This guide explains when each is the right choice for construction, plumbing and structural applications.
Pre-galvanized steel pipe is produced by continuously passing the welded pipe through a zinc bath at the mill, then cutting to length. Hot-dip galvanized pipe is produced by fabricating the pipe first, then dipping the finished pipe into a separate zinc bath. The difference in process produces different coating thicknesses, different coating structures at the cut ends, and different suitability for outdoor, structural and code-required applications.
Coating Structure and Cut-End Behavior
Pre-galvanized pipe typically has a zinc coating of about 30–55 μm (Z120 to Z275 designation), applied uniformly to the outside of the pipe while the weld seam is also coated. Hot-dip galvanized pipe, when galvanized after fabrication, has a heavier coating of about 70–100 μm on the outside surface, with thicker build-up at corners and threads, and a thinner coating on the inside of the pipe. The critical difference is the cut end: pre-galvanized pipe is cut after coating, so the cut face is bare steel and will rust unless protected; hot-dip pipe can be cut before or after dipping, but the cut end is the weak point in both cases.
When Pre-Galvanized Pipe Is the Right Choice
Pre-galvanized steel pipe is the right specification for indoor applications with low corrosion exposure: electrical conduit, HVAC duct support, indoor plumbing risers, sprinkler system risers, light commercial framing, and any interior structural use. The smoother outside surface is more aesthetically acceptable in visible indoor runs, and the cost is lower than hot-dip. Pre-galvanized is also the right call for high-volume OEM fabrication where the pipe will be painted or powder-coated after assembly, since the smooth zinc surface is an excellent paint substrate.
When Hot-Dip Galvanized Pipe Is the Necessary Choice
Hot-dip galvanized pipe is the standard specification for outdoor construction, structural applications, underground or embedded service, agricultural buildings, marine environments, and any project where the pipe will see weather, soil contact or chloride exposure. The thicker coating, the formation of zinc-iron alloy layers, and the ability to coat threads and fittings after fabrication give significantly longer service life. For structural applications, hot-dip is required by ASTM A123 and most building codes for outdoor exposed steel.
Code, Threading and Field Modification
For threaded pipe, hot-dip galvanizing is the conservative choice because it coats the threads uniformly and protects against rust at the joint. Pre-galvanized pipe can be threaded, but the threading operation cuts through the zinc at the thread roots, leaving bare steel exposed to corrosion. Where pre-galvanized pipe is threaded in the field, the cut threads must be coated with a zinc-rich repair paint. For welded pipe in structural service, hot-dip is also preferred because the thicker coating survives the weld heat-affected zone better than the thin pre-galvanized layer.
What to Specify on the RFQ
State the substrate standard (ASTM A53, A106, A795 as applicable), the galvanizing process (pre-galvanized per ASTM A653 vs hot-dip per ASTM A123), the coating weight (G60, G90, or heavier), the nominal size and wall thickness, and the end finish (plain cut, threaded, grooved). For outdoor, structural, agricultural or marine service, default to hot-dip; for indoor conduit, plumbing risers and OEM fabrication, pre-galvanized is acceptable and saves cost. Always specify zinc-rich touch-up paint for any field cuts, threads or welds.
