Stainless steel bar for marine hardware is most often a choice between 316 and 2205 duplex. This guide explains where 316 is sufficient and where the higher strength and chloride resistance of 2205 is worth the upgrade, with selection guidance for boat fittings, cleats, shafts and dock hardware.
Marine hardware is one of the most demanding service environments for stainless steel bar. Components see continuous saltwater spray, biofouling, mechanical loading from waves and lines, and galvanic coupling with other alloys in the same assembly. The grade choice is between standard marine-grade 316 (1.4401) and lean or standard 2205 duplex stainless, with the call driven by load, section size and exposure severity. Picking the lower grade to save cost is one of the most common failure modes in marine OEM and aftermarket hardware.
When 316 Bar Is the Correct Marine Choice
316 stainless steel bar contains about 16–18% chromium, 10–14% nickel and 2–3% molybdenum, which gives it good general corrosion resistance in saltwater splash and spray zones. For most recreational boat hardware, dock cleats, hinges, light-duty shafting, rod ends and fasteners in a rinsed-and-dried environment, 316 has decades of field-proven performance. To get the full benefit of 316 in marine service, the surface must be passivated after fabrication, and components should not be left in contact with carbon steel tools or filings that will cause rust staining.
Where 2205 Duplex Bar Is the Right Upgrade
2205 duplex stainless steel bar roughly doubles the yield strength of 316 and adds significantly higher resistance to chloride pitting and crevice corrosion, with a PREN (pitting resistance equivalent number) around 35 versus 316's 25. For marine hardware that is heavily loaded, partially submerged, hard to inspect or expensive to replace (rudder stocks, drive shafts, large cleats, commercial fittings, sub-sea connector pins), 2205 is the safer choice. The trade-off is more demanding fabrication: 2205 requires tighter control of heat input during welding, and the higher strength makes machining slower, so designers should specify 2205 only where the duty justifies it.
Common Pitfalls in Marine Bar Selection
Three failure modes show up repeatedly in marine hardware made from stainless bar. First, the use of 303 or 304 instead of 316: these grades lack molybdenum and pit quickly in saltwater, so any marine call-out that does not specify 316 or higher should be questioned. Second, the use of standard 316 in permanently submerged or heavily fouled conditions where crevice corrosion still occurs. Third, the use of 2205 without proper weld procedure qualification, which can lead to sigma-phase embrittlement. For any hardware that will sit in a crevice (deck plate under a base, rudder bearing housing), consider 2205 or a coated 316.
What to Specify on the Marine Hardware RFQ
State the grade explicitly: 316 (1.4401 / SUS316) for general marine, or 2205 (1.4462 / SUS329J3L) for high-load or fully exposed service. Specify the bar profile (round, square, hex), the diameter or width, the tolerance (ASTM A479 or A276), and the finish (hot rolled, peeled, centerless ground). For machined parts, mention if the bar must be supplied in the solution-annealed condition for best corrosion performance, and confirm the mill certificate lists the molybdenum content to avoid an unintended 304 substitution.
