Stainless steel coil is increasingly specified for architectural roofing, wall cladding, soffits and fascia on commercial, industrial and high-end residential buildings. Two grades dominate specification: 304 (1.4301) for most inland and urban projects, and 316 (1.4401) for coastal, industrial or de-icing salt exposure. The grade choice drives the lifetime of the envelope: under the wrong conditions, 304 will tea-stain and corrode within a few years, while 316 in the same envelope can look unchanged after decades.

When 304 Coil Is the Right Architectural Choice

304 stainless steel coil is the workhorse for inland and urban roofing and cladding projects where chloride exposure is low. It performs well on factories, warehouses, transport terminals, schools and commercial buildings more than a few kilometers from the coast, and away from heavy industrial pollution. For aesthetic continuity with other stainless trim and for fabrication into standing-seam profiles, 304 is available in a wide range of finishes (2B, BA, No.4, hairline, mirror) and is the more economical choice.

When 316 Coil Becomes the Necessary Upgrade

316 stainless steel coil is required for any architectural envelope within roughly 1–5 km of a coastline, on buildings subject to de-icing salt spray, or in heavy industrial atmospheres with chloride or sulfur compounds. The 2–3% molybdenum addition in 316 resists chloride pitting and tea-staining that would otherwise mark 304 within months of exposure. For premium architectural projects where the envelope must look unchanged after 20+ years with minimal maintenance, 316 is the conservative choice even at slightly higher inland sites.

Finish Selection and Design Detail

The finish on stainless steel coil affects both appearance and corrosion behavior. A smooth 2B or BA finish shows less dirt pickup and is easier to rain-wash clean, while a No.4 or hairline brushed finish hides minor fabrication marks but holds more surface contaminants. For roofing and cladding, specify the finish by ASTM A480 designation (No.4, BA, etc.) and confirm the orientation of any directional polish. Design details matter: avoid pockets where moisture and debris can sit, slope horizontal surfaces at least 3° for drainage, and use stainless or compatible fasteners and clips to avoid galvanic corrosion.

What to Specify on the Architectural RFQ

State the grade: 304 (1.4301) for inland and urban, or 316 (1.4401) for coastal, de-icing salt or industrial exposure. Specify the finish (2B, BA, No.4, hairline, mirror), the thickness (commonly 0.5–0.8 mm for roofing, 0.8–1.2 mm for cladding), the coil width, and the required coil weight or inner diameter. Confirm the mill certificate shows the actual chromium, nickel and molybdenum content, and ask for a sample of the actual production coil before bulk shipment to verify the finish and color match the architectural mock-up.
